What is clinical massage therapy?

Advanced clinical massage, also known as sports massage, is a type of massage therapy that uses a range of techniques to achieve a specific outcome, including: pain relief, an increased range of motion and relaxation. It’s essentially an adaptive practise, with every person who seeks it out requiring a slightly different approach – deep and soft tissue release, myofascial release, hot & cold treatments, use of acupressure points and trigger points, and stretching can all form part of the treatment plan. The treatment can be localised to a specific areas such as the neck or shoulder, alternatively it can be used to care for the body as a whole.

Where clinical massage differs a bit from other clinical treatments is the fact that it focuses on self-care – simply put, we will discuss relevant lifestyle issues with you as part of the treatment to ensure that you are fully involved and in control of your recovery.

What are the benefits of Massage?

The benefits of sports massage are far reaching when it comes to injury rehabilitation – it can also be used as a preventative measure during training, as it keeps muscles relaxed, making you less prone to strain.

The length and number of treatments required depends on the condition being treated and how long it has been present. If forced to quote a ballpark, we would say that six is probably the maximum number of treatments needed (in most cases) to see results, but usually two to three one hour treatments will produce a significant effect or even solve the problem. Chronic conditions can take more than six sessions to see results.
We use hour-long sessions in order to give us time to be thorough. The cause of pain is not always located where the pain is felt because, in some cases, certain parts of the body have needed to work harder to compensate for an injury – those muscles may be the ones hurting and we need time to treat them, as well as the actual source of the problem.

The body is bombarded with a host of stresses every day, from the way we sit at our desks, through to the way we sleep, stand, think, play and exercise, and what clinical massage does is assess what those strains are doing to our bodies and helps set the balance right – following a massage or series of massages, you’ll feel better, have more energy and be reinvigorated.

Using her knowledge of corrective exercises and accumulated hours of experience, Lyndsey ensures that all of her clients enjoy the very best results. She has continued her education through the well renowned JING institute of Advanced Massage Training which has been revolutionising the massage industry in the UK since 2003. Developed by celebrated teachers and authors, Rachel Fairweather, BA, AOS, LMT, and Meghan S. Mari, BA, MA LMT, it is recognised internationally as a centre of excellence. Lyndsey has completed the Certificate in Advanced Myofascial Release, is currently completing the Advanced Clinical Massage therapist Certification, and has started the BTEC level 6 Professional Diploma in Advanced Clinical Massage and Sports Massage.
